First, the Acorn Group is just me, Mike May. The name of the company isn't a ruse to try and make me look bigger or more formidable than I am. It used to be a group when I launched the company in 2004. Since then, the nature of the work I've taken on has changed and I do it all myself. I kept the name because I couldn't see spending another $8 when I've got a perfectly good domain name already, and because of the acorn tattoo on my bicep. And I reserve the right to become a bona fide group again in the future.
Before striking out on my own, here are some of the jobs I've had:
- VP of Events, Interactive Advertising Bureau
- VP of Events, Jupiter Media Metrix
- Senior Analyst and Research Director, Jupiter Research
- E-Commerce Marketing Manager, Avon Products
- Director of Marketing, Charles River Consulting
- Marketing Manager, Kaplan Education Services
I also went to school. This is where and for what:
- New York University, MBA in Management and Marketing
- University of British Columbia, MA in English
- Colgate University, BA in English
I was kind of a big deal from 1999 - 2001, quoted pretty regularly about e-commerce and digital marketing in The New York Times and The Economist and Forbes, and appearing on CNN, NBC Nightly News, Good Morning America and other news broadcasts. That was fun while it lasted, which of course it didn't. Today I do actual work for my clients, usually tied directly to their revenue. It doesn't make me a celebrity, but it does earn me a lot of repeat business.
